A client’s backup schedule is completely convoluted, so occasionally we notice that backups start to fail because they are waiting for devices to get free (error message states “Timeout waiting for devices to get free” – basically they are locked in another session, causing remaining sessions to fail). A few times the sessions will abort themselves freeing up the devices, but if we wait too long, all sessions will start to fail. This guide is just a quick way to stop all backups, clear the database of all sessions (running, waiting, failed), unlock the devices (tape or virtual tape), and restart the HP Data Protector services. This guide will show you how we extended a filesystem on HP-UX 11.23 (and up) by 200GB, by forming a 200GB meta on the EMC Symmetrix DMX-4 (SAN), presenting it to the server as a single storage disk, then adding the new disk to the volume group which the filesystem belongs, and then extending the filesystem by that 200GB. To this day, SMF (Simple Machines Forum still doesn’t show users the real (registered) name of an online user, but whatever custom name they have chosen for themselves. This makes it hard to know whom someone really is, especially if you want to send them a PM and you can’t find them by their original name. Read the rest of this entry »
